Honoring Mental Health Awareness Month: Why Mental Health Matters Every Day

May is Mental Health Awareness Month– a time to prioritize emotional well-being, reduce stigma, and learn how therapy and medication can support a healthier life. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, yet many suffer in silence.

Whether you’re managing anxiety, coping with grief, navigating life transitions, or simply seeking a space to explore your thoughts and emotions, Mental Health Awareness Month is about breaking the silence, offering hope, and reminding our communities that help is available and healing is possible.

On this episode of the More Than a Therapy Couch podcast, we sit down with, ALy Resnick LPC, LMHC and Founder and CEO.

Common Mental Health Challenges

At Tree of Life Counseling Center, we believe that your mental health is just as important as your physical well-being. Some of the challenges we see often include individuals coping with:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression and mood disorders

  • Burnout and work-related stress

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship issues

  • Trauma and PTSD

When left unaddressed, poor mental health can significantly impact various aspects of one’s life including increased risk of chronic disease, weakened immune system, social isolation, unhealthy lifestyle choices, decreased productivity, and reduced sense of overall well-being.

What You Can Do to Get Involved

Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity for everyone, not just mental health professionals, to get involved. Here are a few ways you can participate:

  • Talk about mental health with friends, family, or coworkers.

  • Share resources or uplifting messages on social media

  • Check in with yourself– how are you really feeling?

  • Learn about mental health conditions through trusted organizations like NAMI or Mental Health America

  • Schedule a therapy session or encourage someone you care about to seek support.

By taking steps every day to normalize conversations about mental health, we can work together to help reduce stigma and create a culture of compassion and understanding.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy can be a powerful tool for self-awareness, emotional healing, and personal development. You don’t need to wait to be in crisis to speak with someone. In fact, some of the most meaningful progress happens when we address issues early–before they grow.

Whether you’re exploring therapy for the first time or returning after time away, this month is a great moment to start prioritizing your health and well-being.
